It has been estimated that every year in the United States, as many as 442,000 cases of pneumococcal pneumonia occur in adults 50 and older.
Many of those cases can be serious enough to cause hospitalization. It has been estimated that pneumococcal pneumonia puts as many as 302,000 adults over 50 in the hospital each year. And between 5% and 7% of people who are infected with pneumococcal pneumonia in the United States die from it each year.
